Effect of steroid hormone on rheumatic carditis.

چکیده
One hundred and eleven patients with rheumatic carditis of the first attack were treated with steroid hormone. In the cases, in which the steroid hormone therapy started within 2 weeks from the onset of the disease, all except one did not reveal a residual valvular heart disease after 2 years from the treatment. It was suggested that early diagnosis and the earliest start of steroid hormone therapy with large dose on rheumatic carditis is necessary for the prevention against development of rheumatic heart disease. A therapeutic schedule for rheumatic fever is recommended.

Therapy of Severe Rheumatic Carditis
ALTHOUGH adrenocortical steroid therapy has been available for 14 years, its value in acute rheumatic fever still remains controversial. The Cooperative Study 1 failed to demonstrate any significant difference between aspirin and steroids with regard to their effect on residual heart disease. On the other hand, extensive data collected at the House of the Good Samaritan 2 have shown that steroi...

A trial was conducted using sequential analysis by pairs to compare the efficacy of corticosteroids and salicylates in the treatment of acute rheumatic carditis. The results show a significantly favourable effect of steroid treatment both in clinical response and in reduction of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate. In addition, patients receiving steroids usually had a shorter hospital stay. The...

In order to find the correlation between the severity of carditis in acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) and anti-streptolysin O (ASO) titers, we performed a retrospective study in Shiraz on one-hundred and four patients. The mean age of the patients was 11 years. Fever was seen in 85.5%, arthralgia in 95.2%, arthritis in 81.7%, car...
متن کاملCombined Aspirin and Cortisone Treatment of Acute Rheumatic Fever: A Controlled Trial in Young Men.
For many years large doses of salicylate have been used in the treatment of acute rheumatic fever (Coburn, 1936, 1943; Manchester, 1946). Although the acute manifestations of the disease are partially suppressed (Illingworth, Burke, Doxiadis, Lorber, Philpott, and Stone, 1954), there is no convincing evidence that chronic damage to the heart is prevented (Bywaters, 1950). However, the introduct...
